Proper Cleaning of an Indoor Grow Room

First step to a healthy harvest is a clean grow room

Because many parts of the country have temperatures and weather that vary widely, many people choose to have grow rooms in their homes. Grow rooms can maintain consistent climates so that healthy plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables can be grown at any time of the year.

Prior to initial use, a grow room should be properly cleaned and prepared so that the plants will have the best chance of propagating and growing healthy and strong.

The first thing that must be done is to purchase a good quality pesticide fogger and fog the room. This is necessary because there may be insects that you won’t want on your plants. Even if insects aren’t visible to the eye, they may still be there, as many insects are extremely tiny and difficult to see.

Once the room has been fogged, it must be cleaned. Using a spray bottle of an extremely diluted bleach and water solution, spray the entire room. This includes walls, floors, corners, ceilings and tables. Next, using a clean rag soaked with clean water, wipe down every surface that has been sprayed with the diluted bleach and water solution. Make sure everything is completely dry before commencing with the garden. It may take a day or two to dry completely, depending on the environment.

While the plants are growing, it is important to keep the grow room very clean. Sweep or wipe up any soil, leaves and debris that have fallen on the floor, table surfaces or on the soil in the pots. Water spills and damp areas should be wiped dry right away because excess moisture can cause plants to rot.

All equipment used in growing plants should be cleaned or dusted at least monthly. This includes light timers, atmosphere controllers, fans, heaters, air conditioners, light bulbs, intake filters and even electrical switches and plug sockets.

After the garden has been harvested, repeat the initial process of fogging, wiping down the room with the light bleach and water solution and allowing it to dry thoroughly before starting again. If there are different plants growing in different cycles and the room is never completely empty, it is okay to use a light pesticide fogger from time to time to ensure that the plants and room remain free of pests. Just make sure to always clean up water, excess moisture, fallen leaves and debris right away and to continue monthly cleaning of all equipment.

Following these simple instructions will ensure a continuously healthy and bountiful indoor garden.
