Hydroponics: Pros and Cons

Hydroponics is a method of crop cultivation where the plants roots are usually submerged in a nutrient solution or periodically misted with the solution.  Hydroponics has both advantages and disadvantages. It can be difficult to start and maintain a hydroponic garden at first, but once you have mastered the skill you will find that there are more pros than cons when using hydroponics.

-Pros-

Some advantages of using hydroponics are: you don’t need soil (buying new soil for each cycle can get expensive) ; it is easier to stop diseases from growing and outdoor pest aren’t a concern (less pesticides and herbicides are needed); less water is needed since no water is wasted; you can grow all year round with indoor hydroponics because it is also easy to maintain a good temperature; it is easier to control how much nutrients the plants are getting; plants grow faster and have bigger yields; plants can be more nutritional and taste better when grown with hydroponics; growing with hydroponics also takes up less room (you can put the plants closer together than you can with soil.

-Cons-

Here are some disadvantages of growing with hydroponics: there are some plants that can’t grow using hydroponics; Hydroponic cultivation takes more technical knowledge and training than soil cultivation; setup costs can get very expensive;  crops must be maintained more often;  if the watering system fails your plants will dry out and die very quickly; hydroponically-cultivated plants usually provide less of a profit; certain methods of hydroponics will require replacement mediums such as Rockwool, perlite, and vermiculite. The worst disadvantage is that plants are no longer unique so if a disease occurs it will affect all the plants the same.

When done right hydroponics can be an excellent way to cultivate herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Hydroponics can be very a expensive hobby to start, but you may find it very satisfying and rewarding. With practice you can maximize your plants growth and yield, so start out building a small system that is easy to control. This will help you to pin point any problems you might be having with your hydroponic garden. After perfecting your system you can expand your garden and try to get more out of it or you can always experiment with different hydroponic methods and see what works best for different types of plants.  Good Luck and have fun!

Hydroponics is sweeping across the country as a great way to grow quality high yield crops while being able to grow indoors or outdoors. Hydroponics can offer growers many different growing techniques, some growers prefer to grow with organic nutrients and substrates but the majority choose to use whatever the current buzz is saying works. The cool thing about hydroponics is that their is so much to learn and with new products coming out everyday it keeps the excitement level at an all time high unlike normal gardening can usually cause.
